Pre-trip Report September 2015

Written by Kev

Tam and I had always planned to visit our friends in Oklahoma and Texas – it wasn’t a case of ‘if’, but ‘when’. It just so happened that Deb and Matt (our friends in Gloucester) were thinking about a trip and they kindly asked if we would like to go with them. It seemed like an opportunity too good to miss, so we agreed and the planning started.

The itinerary looks like the following:

Thurs 10th September – drive to Heathrow and spend the night in the Sofitel at terminal 5 – meet Deb and Matt there. A quiet evening will follow. Perhaps a large cocoa and a game of whist.

Friday 11th September – Fly with British Airways to Dallas, arriving around 3.30pm local time. We are flying Premium Economy for the first time thanks to a large number of Avios points we had.

First night to be spent in the Nylo Hotel, Los Colinas, which is only a few miles from Dallas airport. Again, cocoa may be the order of the day, but then again to hell with it, I’m on holiday, I might push the boat out and have a cup of tea.

Saturday 12th September – an early start is envisaged due to the jetlag. We will be driving the 200miles to Oklahoma City to spend the night in the Skirvin Hilton Hotel. Here we will meet up with our Oklahoman friend, Susan,

Sunday 13th September to Wednesday 16th September – drive to Tulsa and stay in the Cedar Rock Inn for 4 nights. http://www.cedarrockinn.com/
Susan and Deb have been planning like crazy for the Oklahoma part of our trip. Tam and I have taken the more relaxed approach (some might call it lazy, I prefer relaxed) and left them to all the hard work. Suffice to say there will be lots to see and do for this part of the trip.

Thursday 17th September to Sunday 20th September – 4 nights in a rather lovely looking log cabin in Beavers Bend State Park. http://www.hiddenhillscabinsok.com/cabins/tumbledownlodge.html
This is all rather exciting for me because I didn’t know beavers could bend and I’m very much looking forward to seeing them.
This part of the holiday is planned to be a bit more chilled out with BBQ’s, American football (watching on TV – not participating) and drink (cocoa of course) being the order of the day. Tam and I also plan to go kayaking down the Mountain Fork River. Susan will be joining us for this part of the trip as well.

Monday 21st September – drive 450 miles to San Antonio, Texas and spend the night with our friends Sharon and Keith in their house.

Tuesday 22nd September to Friday 25th September – move to the Hotel Contessa in San Antonio. http://www.thehotelcontessa.com/ Once again we have decided to allow others to have the pleasure of planning this element of our holiday. Sharon has obliged and is going to be our tour guide for the duration.

Saturday 26th September – fly home from Austin.

You may have noticed that there is going to be a fair bit of travelling and packing/unpacking on this trip. On the plus side, this should allow us to see much more than if we stayed in one place.

Oh, and if you believe that we are actually going to be drinking cocoa on this journey, you’re more gullible than I give you credit for.
